Pride In The Past
The Gealic Athletic Association is the biggest and most active sporting organisation in Ireland, boasting a total membership that exceeds 800,000. Few organisations of any kind can boast its popularity, following, membership and marketability.

Today the organisation in Down stands as a sporting leader. We currently field 14 County Teams at all levels within Hurling and Gaelic Football. There are 47 local GAA Clubs within Down, average of 20 football, hurling and camogie ages, ranging from U-8 to adult level. The county jned estimated membership of 25,000 people but the extended "GAA Family" in Co Down is estimated as being in excess of 125,000.

With five victories in five appearances in All Ireland Senior finals, Down has a reputation for rising to the big occasion. Kitted out in their distinctive Red and Black, Down's massive fane base has been responsible for some of the largest match attendances in GAA history.

Back on the 1st of November in the year of 1887 when the first gaelic football match was recorded in County Down the large number of spectators present could not have imagined that they were sowing the seed for what we hold so dear today.

The GAA in Down, the biggest sporting body in the county, has grown from that small acorn sown that day in the townland of Lacken into a vibrant organisation that has now amongst its jewels a modern floodlit stadium at Pairc Esler in Newry.

Over the past 100 years, the GAA in Down has travelled a journey that has seen its famous Red and Black colours blaze a trail that others only aspire to follow.
