Club Down - Making It Happening Club Down was first formed in 2002 with the specific aim of assisting the redevelopment of Pairc Esler. Harnessing the goodwill and support of GAA Central Council and Ulster Council, Club Down set about the task of raising the necessary finance which, in turn, levered important grant aid from both the Sports Council and Newry & Mourne Council.
Working with the County Committee, architects and contractors, Club Down helped deliver the reconstruction of the Canal Terrace and building of the impressive South Stand. This increased the spectator capacity of Pairc Esler to 20,000, with covered seating for 4,000, and a vast improvement in the ancillary facilities, including turnstiles and toilets.
In recognition of the progress made in developing the stadium to exacting spectator standards, the Ulster Council then made additional significant investment in the complete re-surfacing of the playing field and the installation of floodlights.
Today the stadium stands as the biggest and best sports ground in the whole of the county and has been commended by visiting teams and supporters; it is testimony to what Down people can do and the determination to 'make it happen'..
