Clonduff Win Sean O'Neill Cup at Granco Classic
A full compliment of teams came out to play at the 2009 Granco Trucks Club Down Golf Classic played at Warrenpoint Golf Club on Friday (15th), leading to a varied result when the cards came in at the end of the day. With showers and dry spells alternating during the day, delivering mixed conditions for golf, it was the teams who set off mid-day who fared best on the pristine Warrenpoint course.
In addition to the main classic competition, there was plenty of interest in the GAA clubs section for the Sean O’Neill Cup, won in recent years by Dromara, Attical, Glassdrumman and Downpatrick.
The main classic competition required a count-back to separate two impressive teams who each recorded 104 points, the team captained by former Down All-Ireland winners Brendan McKernan and Neil Collins, partnered by Burren's "Shorty" Treanor and Mark Curtis being declared eventual overall winners.
In second place was the Clonduff quartet led by Aidan Brown, playing along with Lorcan Mussen & Harry Brown, and Kieth Kelly, as the leading GAA club entrant, they also took the Sean O’Neill Cup.
An impressive "welcome pack" including special edition Club Down golf cap for each player was provided by sponsors Granco Trucks, and their own four-ball led by Kieran Grant were rewarded with top score in the Society team section. An additional putting competition sponsored by Hillyard House of Castlewellan was won by Colm Cunnighan (Glassdrumman) while the home club’s Pat McAteer won the prize for nearest the pin at the 16th.
At the prize-giving, Warrenpoint Golf Club President, Dan McKernan, thanked Club Down for bringing the event back to the club, while Club Down Chairman, Malachy McCourt, commended the hospitality and help of the officers, council and staff of Warrenpoint Golf Club. He also thanked all competitors and sponsors, especially main sponsor Patrick Grant of Granco Trucks. Sean Og McAteer, representing Coiste Chontae An Dun, expressed thanks to the dedicated organising committee of Vincent McGovern, James & Mary McGrath, Patsy Quinn, Peter Rooney, Jimmy Kelly and Michael Keenan, and a hugely successful event was rounded off by a great night's entertainment from Gene Fitzpatrick and Danny Doran.
Earlier in the day the BBC cameras were in attendance for a live sports report in the evening news with, uniquely, the Down team for the Championship game with Fermanagh being released to the press at the event. |
